Im thinking of picking up novice BH in the next week or so. I have Master Scout and Master Marksmen already and I am working on master SL (which I will drop after mastering it to work towards BH). I noticed that when looking at the BH skill trees I am already gaining pistol and carbine XP.

Is there a way to gain heavy weapons XP as well, before reaching novice BH?

master commando first and use a flame thrower.

you don't.

Get a LLC. kill anything that moves. Nuna's butterflies, all of it. tons of EXP.

The LLC is considered a Rifle, so you get Rifle XPs. For a low CL, Novice Commando, here are some heavy weapons to grant Hvy Weapons XPs:

Launcher Pistol- Be careful with the cone AOE.

Corellian Destroyer- Be aware of the blast radius. It has a 64m range, which is nice.
